About the BYD Atto 1

The BYD Atto 1 (also known as the Seagull in some markets) represents a breakthrough moment for electric vehicle adoption in New Zealand. At $29,990 plus on-road costs, BYD claims to have achieved "true price parity" with internal-combustion rivals, making this the most affordable new electric vehicle available in the country.

Part of BYD's Ocean series, the Atto 1 brings the brand's signature Ocean aesthetic design to a compact city car format. Built on BYD's advanced e-Platform 3.0, it features the company's revolutionary Blade Battery technology, delivering enhanced safety and longevity in a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry.

While the 220km range (WLTP) of the Essential variant might seem modest compared to larger EVs, it's perfectly suited for urban and suburban commuting patterns. The majority of New Zealand daily commutes are well within this range, and the significantly lower purchase and running costs make it an attractive option for city dwellers and families seeking a second vehicle.

The Atto 1 is available for pre-order now through BYD's distributor Ateco Automotive, with deliveries expected to begin in January 2026. It can be leased for as little as $99 per week, making electric mobility more accessible than ever before.
