  • NZ Price: $165 (Smart EV Chargers, Hyundai/Kia) to $189 (EV East, BYD) inc GST

Safe Use Guidelines

  • • Never connect V2L to the electricity grid or backfeed a home through a power outlet
  • • Connect only one appliance at a time and avoid multi-plug boards
  • • Never use high-power appliances such as an air conditioner, washing machine or dryer
  • • Never use equipment that needs a continuous power supply, such as medical equipment
  • • Keep the adapter dry and handle it with dry hands
  • • Set a battery discharge limit (80% to 20%) so the car stops supplying power before the battery runs low

Benefits

  • • Recharge an e-bike, power camping equipment or run some appliances from the EV battery
  • • Works even when the vehicle is turned off
  • • Vehicle failsafe prevents V2L overloading
  • • Aftermarket adapters hold a NZ Supplier Declaration of Conformity (Smart EV Chargers)
  • • Kia EV6 GT-Line includes an exterior V2L adaptor as standard

Considerations

  • • Only works with V2L-capable vehicles; adapters are brand-specific (Hyundai/Kia vs BYD)
  • • Output is limited to about 3.6kW, so high-power appliances are not suitable
  • • Some adapters are backordered: EV East quoted an estimated 6-8 weeks for its BYD adapter
  • • The charge port must be unlocked (Door Unlock on the smart key) before removing the adapter

About V2L Adapters

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) lets an electric vehicle supply its stored high-voltage battery energy as household-style AC power. Hyundai New Zealand says it can be used to recharge an e-bike, power electrical camping equipment or run some domestic appliances, even when the vehicle is turned off. On Hyundai's system the supply is 230V / 50Hz, up to 3.6kW (15A), and a V2L External Adaptor is required.

The adaptor plugs into the vehicle's Type 2 charge port and provides a standard New Zealand 3-pin socket. In New Zealand, Smart EV Chargers sells an adapter for V2L-capable Hyundai and Kia models for $165 inc GST, and EV East lists a BYD-specific adaptor for $189. Some vehicles, such as the Kia EV6 GT-Line, include an exterior V2L adaptor as standard.

V2L works like a portable generator, not home battery storage. Hyundai warns it must never be connected to the electricity grid or used to backfeed a house, and recommends powering one appliance at a time.
