Choosing an Adapter
- • Pick a Bluetooth LE adapter if you use an iPhone or iPad
- • Check the adapter is on the Leaf Spy tested-adapter list or sold for Leaf Spy
- • Some adapters, like the Stahlcar ST350, also work with Dr Prius for Toyota and Lexus hybrids
- • BLE adapters connect inside the app, not through the phone's Bluetooth settings
- • Leaf Spy Pro adds reading and clearing fault codes on supported model years
Benefits
- • See battery state of health and amp-hour capacity beyond the dashboard capacity bars
- • Compare cell-pair voltages to spot a section of the battery that is out of balance
- • Monitor battery temperature on long trips with repeated rapid charging
- • Check rapid-charge and AC charge counts and fault codes when inspecting a used Leaf
- • Small enough to keep in the car
Considerations
- • The Leaf Spy app is sold separately and Leaf Spy Pro is normally a paid app
- • Battery health figures are estimates from the car's battery-management system and change with temperature and charge level
- • Some functions depend on the Leaf model year and market
- • Unplug the adapter if the car will sit unused for a long time, as it can drain the 12V battery
- • The NZEV KW902 is listed for Android only and showed as out of stock on 9 November 2026
About Leaf Spy OBD2 Adapters
A Leaf Spy OBD2 adapter is a small Bluetooth dongle that plugs into the OBD2 diagnostic port of a Nissan Leaf. It sends vehicle data to the Leaf Spy app on a phone or tablet, which shows traction-battery information that is not normally shown on the dashboard, such as battery state of health, amp-hour capacity, cell-pair voltages, battery temperatures, rapid and AC charge counts and diagnostic trouble codes. The adapter is only the communication hardware: the app is bought separately, and Leaf Spy Pro is normally a paid app.
New Zealand retailers sell these adapters for checking a used Leaf before buying and for monitoring battery condition over time. Stahlcar notes that the battery health values are estimates calculated by the car's battery-management system and can move with temperature, charge level and recent driving, so a Leaf Spy check should be combined with a road test, a charging test and a normal inspection.
Which adapter works depends on your phone. The Leaf Spy developer's tested-adapter list says Bluetooth 3 adapters won't work with iOS, while Bluetooth 4/5 LE (BLE) adapters work with both Android and iOS. In New Zealand, Stahlcar sells its ST350 BLE adapter for $95 and Drive EV sells the LELink BLE adapter for $69 inc GST, both for iPhone and Android. NZEV lists the Konnwei KW902 for $32.99 inc GST, which it describes as compatible with the Leaf Spy app for Android.
