Information about past government incentives for electric vehicles in New Zealand
Important Notice
The Clean Car Discount scheme ended on 31 December 2023. The New Zealand government discontinued the rebates for new and used electric vehicles as part of policy changes announced in late 2023. This page now provides historical information about these incentives for reference purposes.
For current information about electric vehicle policies and any new initiatives, please visit the official government websites or check with your local vehicle dealers for the most up-to-date information about EV pricing and any remaining benefits.
Clean Car Discount (Ended 31 Dec 2023)
The Clean Car Discount scheme provided substantial rebates for new and used electric vehicles. New electric vehicles were eligible for up to $7,015 in rebates, while used electric vehicles could receive up to $3,507. This initiative was designed to make electric vehicles more affordable and accessible to New Zealand families, encouraging the transition away from traditional petrol and diesel vehicles.
The rebate amount depended on the vehicle's emissions rating and whether it was new or used. Pure electric vehicles received the maximum rebate, while plug-in hybrid vehicles received a slightly lower amount. The scheme was instrumental in accelerating EV adoption across New Zealand during its operation from 2021 to 2023.

Current Business Benefits
While consumer incentives have ended, some business benefits for electric vehicles may still be available. Businesses should consult with their accountants regarding current depreciation rates and any applicable tax benefits for electric vehicle fleets. Some local councils may also continue to offer specific benefits such as reduced parking fees or access to bus lanes.
