EV Road User Charges

Everything you need to know about RUC for electric vehicles in New Zealand

Updated April 2024

What are Road User Charges?

Road User Charges (RUC) are fees paid to help fund the construction and maintenance of New Zealand's road network. From 1 April 2024, light electric vehicles under 3.5 tonnes are required to pay RUC, ending the previous exemption period.

RUC for light electric vehicles is charged at $76 per 1,000 kilometers travelled. This charge helps ensure all vehicles contribute fairly to road maintenance costs as the EV market matures.

Which Electric Vehicles Need RUC?

Light Electric Vehicles (Under 3.5 tonnes)

Most passenger electric vehicles, including cars, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles under 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass, are required to pay RUC at $76 per 1,000km.

Examples: Tesla Model 3, Nissan Leaf, BYD Atto 3, Kia EV6, MG4, and most electric passenger vehicles.

Heavy Electric Vehicles (Over 3.5 tonnes)

Heavy electric vehicles have different RUC rates based on their weight category and axle configuration. Commercial operators should check the specific rates for their vehicle type.
