Installation Guidelines

  • • Have the charger and its wiring installed by a registered electrician (WorkSafe)
  • • Ask the electrician to fit a Type B RCD, which WorkSafe calls the most appropriate RCD for EV charging
  • • Plan for trenching to run the supply cable to the pedestal (Trade Depot)
  • • Mount on a concrete pad, around 250mm thick, or on an existing concrete surface (Smart EV Chargers)
  • • Check the pedestal suits your charger model and its mounting hole spacing before buying
  • • Rivet or screw the charger to the post; Smart EV Chargers recommends riveting for secure mounting

Benefits

  • • Puts a charger beside a parking space that has no wall
  • • Keeps the cable off the ground with a socket or cable bracket (Smart EV Chargers universal version)
  • • Aluminium posts are corrosion resistant and suited to outdoor use
  • • An isolator switch can be mounted on the post (Smart EV Chargers)
  • • Listed by NZ retailers from $199

Considerations

  • • Installation cost (trenching, concrete, cabling) is extra and varies by site; ask your installer for a quote first
  • • Some pedestals are made for one charger brand only
  • • Rapidé pedestals hold one charger, for one EV at a time
  • • Store stock varies: Trade Depot showed no store stock on 5 November 2026 (delivery available)
  • • Mounting brackets and cable holders are not included with every version

About EV Charger Pedestals

Most home EV chargers (EVSE) are designed to be fixed to a wall. A pedestal, also called a stand or post, gives the charger something to mount on when the parking space is away from a building, such as an open driveway, a car park or a shared parking area. It is bolted to a concrete pad or an existing concrete surface, and the charger is screwed or riveted to the top of the post.

New Zealand retailers list 1300mm aluminium pedestals. Smart EV Chargers sells three versions at $269 inc GST each: a universal post (mounting holes up to 14cm apart, with a socket and cable bracket), one pre-drilled for its own Smart EV Chargers units, and one for the Evnex E2. Trade Depot lists the Rapidé pedestal (240 x 160 x 1300mm, aluminium alloy) at $199 with a 36 month warranty, for mounting Rapidé wall chargers.

A pedestal does not change the electrical rules. WorkSafe says a wall-mounted charging unit must be installed by a registered electrician, and recommends a Type B RCD for EV charging. Trade Depot notes that pedestal installation typically needs trenching and a concrete pad, and Smart EV Chargers recommends a 250mm thick concrete pad.
