Installation Guidelines

  • • Mount the holder on the wall next to the charger
  • • Check it matches your cable plug: Type 2 or Type 1 (J1772)
  • • Use the supplied screws and wall anchors
  • • On the Smart EV Chargers Type 1 kit, the socket can be mounted separately from the cable holder
  • • For an Evnex X-Series stainless steel pedestal, the Evnex holder fits with a mounting plate

Benefits

  • • Keeps the plug off the ground so it does not get dirty
  • • Removes the tripping hazard of a cable left on the floor
  • • Hanging the cable on the bracket helps prevent it being damaged
  • • Keeps the charging cable tidy between charges
  • • Low cost, from $18 inc GST

Considerations

  • • A holder fits one plug type, so a Type 2 holster will not take a Type 1 plug
  • • Secondhand or imported EVs may use Type 1, so check your cable before buying
  • • The charging cable is not included
  • • The Smart EV Chargers Type 2 holder is rated for cables up to 10m in length
  • • Stock varies: the Smart EV Chargers Type 1 holder was out of stock on 5 November 2026

About EV Cable Holders

An EV cable holder combines a blank socket, or holster, shaped to fit the charging plug with a hook or bracket for the coiled cable. It screws to the wall next to the charger, and some fit a charger pedestal. The plug sits in the holster between charges and the cable hangs off the ground, which keeps dirt out of the plug and removes a tripping hazard, as Bunnings' Arlec listing puts it.

Holders are made for a specific plug. Most of the New Zealand listings below are for Type 2 plugs, and Evnex notes that all new EVs sold in New Zealand are Type 2, while a secondhand or imported EV may be Type 1. Smart EV Chargers also sells a Type 1 (J1772) socket and cable holder at $18, where the socket can be mounted separately from the cable holder; it was out of stock on 5 November 2026. Evnex offers its wall-mounted plug holder in Type 2 and Type 1 versions.

Smart EV Chargers' Type 2 holder is $18 inc GST, is made of ABS, works with cables up to 10m and comes with 3 screws and anchors. Evnex's holder is $25 inc GST and also fits its X-Series stainless steel pedestals with a mounting plate. Bunnings lists the Arlec Type 2 holder at $25.04, and WR Twigg Hawke's Bay sells a Projecta Type 2 holster and cable hook for $21.62 inc GST.
