BYD Seal

The BYD Seal is a five-seat battery electric sedan in BYD’s ‘Ocean aesthetics’ design series, sold new in New Zealand by BYD New Zealand. It sits on a 2,920mm wheelbase, is 4,800mm long and uses BYD’s own Blade Battery.

There are three versions, distinguished by battery size and performance. The Dynamic, from $59,990 plus on-road costs, has a 61.44kWh battery and a 150kW, 310Nm rear motor, reaching 100km/h in 7.5 seconds with 460km of WLTP range. The Premium, from $65,990, has an 82.56kWh battery and a 230kW, 360Nm rear motor, 0–100km/h in 5.9 seconds and 570km of range. The Performance, from $76,990, adds a second motor for all-wheel drive, with 390kW and 670Nm, 0–100km/h in 3.8 seconds and 520km of range.

DC charging peaks at 150kW on the Premium and Performance and 110kW on the Dynamic. Vehicle to Load is standard, so the Seal can supply 3.3kW to run appliances or power tools from the car.

Inside there is a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, a 10.25-inch driver display, wired Apple CarPlay, a wireless phone charger, 12 speakers and a glass roof. The front seats are heated and ventilated, and the driver’s seat has 8-way power adjustment. Safety equipment includes a 360-degree camera, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, emergency lane keeping, child presence detection and front and rear parking sensors.

The Seal comes with a six-year or 150,000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year or 160,000km traction battery warranty and eight years of roadside assistance, transferable to later owners. ANCAP awarded it five stars against its 2023 criteria, applying to all variants.

BYD New Zealand lists a maximum DC charging speed of 150kW for the Premium and Performance and 110kW for the Dynamic. Every Seal has Vehicle to Load as standard, able to supply 3.3kW to run home appliances, power tools and more from the car.

ANCAP awarded the BYD Seal five stars against its 2023 criteria. The rating applies to all variants built from September 2023 and expires in December 2031.
